Our environment and the tourism it produces are our inheritance, our paycheck, and our retirement. The stench of Red Tide represented a catastrophic failure of our legislature to protect our water supply. Tens of millions of dollars were lost as tourists avoided our shores. This neglect must stop. Our natural resources and the economy they support must be protected.
District 72 boasts some of the highest-rated schools in the United States. My three children went to Sarasota public schools, and I know what a blessing it is to raise a family in a district that cares about the future of our children. With the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19, our teachers need us now more than ever. I will fight to keep our tax dollars in their capable hands and out of those seeking to divert them to for-profit charters.
Each year, our commutes take longer, our streets flood higher, and we question the safety of what comes out of our tap just a little bit more. Growth is indeed good, but it must be well managed. With thousands of new residents arriving each year, the strain on our aging infrastructure becomes more evident. As your state representative I will support legislation that prioritizes the needs of our community and its citizens while holding developers to a standard of responsible growth.
COVID-19 has underscored the need for competent leadership in local and state government. This pandemic has threatened our economy and our wellbeing. We need to support our businesses and workers, through public and private partnerships, as we rebuild our economy. I will fight for our community to ensure a robust recovery.
